Indigenous Literacy Project

Songs for Stories

SforSPageFront

Six years ago, the Australian Booksellers Association, the Australian Publishers’ Association and the Fred Hollows Foundation came together to start the Indigenous Literacy Project. The project is committed to improving opportunities for aborigines living in remote communities through education and literacy. Since their inception, they’ve raised over one million dollars to tackle illiteracy, and last year they sent over 15,000 books to 160 communities across Australia.

As part of the Sydney Writers’ Festival, they’ll be holding Songs for Stories, a benefit concert to raise funds for this vital program. Songs for Stories will feature artists such as josh Pyke, Katie Noonan and The Captains, Maggie Noonan, Koomurri Dance Troupe and Freshwater – a great line-up for a great cause! There’ll also be readings from authors Anita Heiss and David Malouf, and the event will be hosted by Julie McCrossin.

Songs for Stories

You can also find out more about the Indigenous Literacy Project, and they’re latest initiative, Book Buzz, here. I’ve had a good look at what they’re doing, and really, this is an awesome program. And it’s easy (and not expensive!) to donate book packs or get involved through events like the The Great Book Swap. We’ll keep you posted on this and other events organised by ILP as they come up through the year.
