March Indigenous Literacy Project News

March Indigenous Literacy Project News

It’s been an enormous journey for Yanumarra parltjatjirratja mularrpa (one very hungry caterpillar) to arrive in the isolated community of Warburton in Western Australia. Its arrival is the result of many months consultation with local elders and educators as part of the The Indigenous Literacy Project (ILP) Book Buzz early literacy project.

Seven years ago, few would have dreamt that the first Indigenous translation of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar', one of the world’s best known English stories, would take place in a remote community on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert. Last year though kids as young as two years old in Warburton ‘tuned into reading’ when they received this and other translated books donated by ILP.

The trial of Book Buzz in three remote communities is now just one strand of The Indigenous Literacy Project which has operated in partnership with The Fred Hollows Foundation and The Australian Book Industry for five years.
